Charleston Democratic state representative Wendell Gilliard is home recovering after being involved in a serious car accident on May 28.
Following the Statehouse’s final budget approval, Count On News 2 reported that Gilliard was traveling home from Columbia on I-26 when his vehicle was struck near exit 177 by another vehicle that had swerved to avoid something down the road.
The swerving vehicle forced Gilliard’s vehicle onto the median strip towards oncoming traffic, where his vehicle was stopped by a safety barrier, according to a media release from Gilliard’s office.
According to the Post and Courier, “a press release from Gilliard’s office described the incident as a multi-vehicle accident, though the S.C. Highway Patrol said the incident involved a single vehicle.”
Gilliard endured injuries from the collision and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A news release the following day stated, “Rep. Gilliard is in stable condition, but he remains deeply concerned for the well-being of all individuals involved in the incident. He has requested that the public join him in offering prayers for everyone affected by this accident.”
The crash remains under investigation.
