How To Properly Change Lanes And Avoid A Car Accident

changing lanes message for two vehicles on the road,How To Properly Change Lanes

We have seen it time and time again: the aggressive, impatient driver weaving in and out of traffic. While a traffic citation is certainly a risk, the biggest threat is the one posed to their fellow motorists. For this reason, we felt it was necessary to explain how to properly change lanes.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of reckless drivers who need to be reminded.

Many people today also rely heavily on their vehicle’s driver assist features, like blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. These features, while convenient, are no replacement for a driver’s vigilant attention when behind the wheel.

Here at Hoffman Law Firm, we know all too well that improperly changing lanes increases the risk of being injured in a car accident in Charleston. Through handling a wide variety of car accident cases, we have learned some valuable tips for keeping your family safe on the roadways in Charleston County.

How To Properly Change Lanes

When changing lanes, be sure to do the following:

  • Check your blind spot before leaving your lane.
  • Check your rearview mirror and side mirrors.
  • Use proper turn signals in advance.
  • Always leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
  • Carefully merge or change lanes.
  • Avoid distractions like texting, eating, drinking, etc.
  • Never change lanes unexpectedly or cut off other drivers.
  • Never drive while intoxicated.

If you have been injured in an auto wreck or a collision with a drunk driver, our Charleston car accident lawyers are here to help. We are not only experienced but passionate about getting car accident victims the compensation they deserve.

New Left Lane For Passing Only Law In South Carolina

Knowing the rules of the road is key to following them. Starting in August 2021, a new law (Section 56-5-1885) went into effect that requires drivers to use the far left lane on controlled access highways exclusively for passing or overtaking other vehicles. Simply put, drivers should use this lane only for passing, not cruising. That keeps the lane open for emergency and law enforcement vehicles and encourages a smooth traffic flow. A fine of up to $25 is the penalty for this offense.
