Coastal Flooding & Road Safety: How King Tides Increase Your Car Accident Risk

One part of Lowcountry life most of us accept is the flooding. A rainstorm may make a trip downtown more difficult, and we know which roads might have water on them at high tide. When the annual King Tide hits, it can create even greater floodwaters – and even greater risks on the road.

You might be asking yourself, “What actually is a King Tide?” Our team at Hoffman Law Firm has that answer and more, including why they can be dangerous and what to do if your accident is caused by coastal flooding in the Lowcountry.

What is a King Tide?

A King Tide is a different phenomenon than the regular tides we see every day. King Tide is the name coined to describe Perigean Spring Tides – the highest seasonal tides each year. King Tides occur when the gravitational pull of the sun and moon align during either a full moon or new moon. The gravitational pull of the moon is twice as strong as the sun’s, resulting in abnormally high tides.

In Charleston, high tides are typically around 5.5 feet. During a King Tide, tides can reach at least 7 feet or more, often causing minor coastal flooding.

Why King Tides and Coastal Floods Are a Growing Problem

King Tides can cause a serious surge of water, which adds to the already increasing coastal flooding in the Lowcountry. Drainage has been an ongoing issue in Charleston, but despite the city’s best efforts, how do you truly drain an area sitting just above sea level?

According to NOAA’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, from 1950 to 2014, Charleston flooding increased from two days a year to 25 days a year. In 2019 alone, the city experienced 89 days of tidal flooding.

When you combine King Tides with rainfall and storms, water levels can become dangerous. Rising water can affect our homes and commutes, creating treacherous road conditions when we have to set out during times of high tide.

How King Tides Flooding Actually Causes Car Accidents

Flooded roads are a serious obstacle for drivers because they can hide dangers beneath the surface. With nearly 75% of weather-related accidents, 5,700 fatalities, and more than 544,000 happening on wet roads, there are several aspects that can contribute to these accidents, including:

  • Standing saltwater can hide potholes, debris, and open manholes
  • Flooding intersections can cause drivers to brake suddenly, increasing the risk of rear-end collisions
  • Wet or flooded pavement reduces tire traction, which can lead to car accidents
  • Vehicles stalled out from flooding can create unexpected obstacles
  • Misjudgment of water depth can cause vehicles to get swept away or stuck

What to Do If You’re in a King Tide-Related Accident

If you’re in an accident due to tidal floodwaters, follow these steps:

  • Get to safety and call 911. Report flooding on roads or blocked lanes so responders can close the road.
  • Seek medical care, even if you show no signs of injury or symptoms.
  • Document the scene and collect evidence. This includes photos of water depth and worn treads, as well as other accident details, such as vehicle damage, downed trees, other vehicles involved, etc.
  • Talk to our experienced team of car accident attorneys at Hoffman Law Firm. A knowledgeable lawyer can help you navigate your case.
