North Charleston has four of the five deadliest roads in Charleston County, according to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, and the city is seeking residents’ help to address the issue.
According to Live 5 News, “the city is developing its Comprehensive Safety Action Plan aimed at identifying where safety improvements are needed most.”
Funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program, the city of North Charleston aims to use these funds for future projects and policies, including “safer crossings, improved lighting, updated signs, and other roadway improvements.”
Instead of relying on their own plans, North Charleston is turning to the residents who drive, walk, and bike these city streets every day to help share their concerns.
The city said it wants to hear from people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds, and neighborhoods who use the streets and transportation system in different ways,” Live 5 News reports. “That includes people who walk, bike, use public transit, drive, use mobility devices or care for family members.”
Last month, more than 700 residents shared their concerns via a public survey. Now, the city is planning to use that feedback to create a focus group made up of residents.
North Charleston is currently accepting applications and will eventually select about 10 to 12 residents to participate.
“It’s important to hear from the community because they see it in their backyard,” North Charleston’s director of special projects, Adam MacConnell, told Live 5 News.
“We know that people want traffic-calming opportunities in their communities. We hear about that frequently. We know that education, enforcement, and some small projects can go a long way in improving safety outcomes for our community.”
What to Do After a Car Accident
As efforts begin to make North Charleston roadways safer, it will still take some time for projects and policies to be implemented – and a lot can happen in the meantime.
Car accidents are unexpected, often leaving all parties involved with heightened anxiety, questions, and no limit of concerns. As attempts are made to make roadways safer, it’s important to know what to do in the event of an accident.
Stay Calm & Check for Injuries
Accidents are highly overwhelming and stressful situations, but it’s important to remain calm. Staying calm will help you maintain control of the situation and stay safe while law enforcement is on its way.
In the initial moments after the accident. Make sure you and your passengers are safe and uninjured. If another vehicle is involved, make sure the other party is okay too.
Move to a Safe Space
If your car is drivable, attempt to move it to the side of the road or into a safe zone while still remaining at the scene if you are in the middle of traffic. If that is not possible, warn oncoming drivers of the situation by turning on your hazard lights or setting up road flares.
Call 911
Whether you were involved in a minor fender bender or a more serious collision, it is critical to call law enforcement to the scene. Police will prepare a legal report of the accident, including the parties involved, details of the scene and the accident, witness statements, and information regarding fault and liability.
The police report will be a crucial piece of documentation your insurance company will need to move forward with claims.
Exchange Information & Document the Details
While the police report provides official documentation, it doesn’t hurt to have your own evidence at hand.
While waiting for law enforcement to arrive, take photos from various angles of the accident scene, the vehicles involved, and the damage. Be sure to also exchange information with the other party involved, including name, address, phone number, and insurance information.
